Effective Use of Rain Water

Brazil

Seventeen years ago, Mr. Mario Yoshio Kinjo (Regional Lecturer) of Tupa City asked himself what he could do for environmental protection. He set up four reservoir tanks for rain water (3,000 l) in his yard. By using rain water for cleaning and sprinkling on the lawn, he was able to save 1,500 Real a year (approx. 76,000 yen at the current exchange rate) on his water cost.

This story was carried in the July 2009 issue of the monthly magazine, Fonte de Luz (Fountain of Light, published by the Seicho-No-Ie Brazil Missionary Headquarters). In September Mr. Kinjo introduced the article to the Mayor and enthusiastically explained to him the value of using rain water. The Mayor, who was deeply impressed, introduced a bill the next week that those who set up a rain water reservoir tank will get a reduction in the property tax. Citizens began to set up tanks, one after another.

In recognition of this contribution, Mr. Kinjo received an “Effort Award” and a medal from the Environment Department of the City Office at the end of last year. This was reported in a local newspaper and drew many people’s attention.
