Pies Made from Tofu Instead of Meat

Brazil

In Brazil, where meat is the main diet, it is a custom in many homes to eat what is called “shurrasco” on weekends and birthday parties. Shurrasco is cooked by broiling beef or pork on skews. Seicho-No-Ie is spreading the message about negative effects of meat eating on the environment. Therefore, members are gradually changing their diet and eat more fish and vegetables.

For example, at the Santa Fe Spiritual Training Center in the North, the staff came up with a way to cook tofu pies instead of meat dishes, which can be served at spiritual training seminars. A member, who owns a farm, donates 60 kg of soy beans every month. They make tofu with those soy beans, add tomatoes, green peppers and other vegetables and mix and bake them. The pie is quite popular with the participants. We have received comments, such as, “It has a firm taste to it like meat and it is also filling.” In addition to the pie, they are now trying a new menu, such as dumplings.

I strongly suggest to the members in Japan to make a tofu pie. Why don’t you try it?
