Garbage Separation

Brazil

The Brazil Missionary Headquarters began garbage separation in 2004 so that the garbage from regular work and events could be recycled. In the corridors and each department/section there are garbage cans in five colors (red for plastic, blue for paper, green for glass, yellow for metal, grey for unrecyclables). Staff and followers are asked to help with garbage separation. Everyone is cooperative. The garbage is picked up by the vendors every 15 days. In the five years since this was started, a total of about 100 tons of garbage have been recycled and it generated an income of about $10,000 (approx. 880,000 yen at the current exchange rate). About half of the missionary areas in 118 locations and three of the five spiritual training centers have these garbage cans. They play an important role in the environmental protection activity.

Collected plastic waste is turned to Eco-bags and T shirts, and metal and glass are turned to raw materials.
