2007 CO2 Emission Offset for the Offices of Headquarters, Main Temple and Uji Temple

Seicho-No-Ie is promoting the Carbon Zero Movement and is working hard to reduce CO2 emissions. Regarding emission offsets at three major offices: Headquarters in Harajuku, Tokyo; Main Temple in Nagasaki Prefecture, and the Uji Temple in Kyoto Prefecture, offset methods were decided: for (1) emissions from energy used, and (2) emissions from transportation of employees’ business trips and movements by attendees for events and meetings.

The 2007 emissions for Category (1)—energy used (electricity, gas, LP gas, water, sewage, petroleum, gas for official cars)— totaled 2039 tons. Of this, after subtracting the offset by green electricity (133 tons), 1,906 tons was offset with the CO2 Certified Emission Reductions trust purchased in January 2008 from Mitsubishi UFJ Mutual Bank.

The 2007 emissions for (2)—transportation-related emissions from business trips and events—totaled 3,705 tons. Of this, after subtracting the offset with green electricity (19.5 tons) and absorption by forestry (1,262 tons from the Main Temple and Uji Temple), 2,424 tons will be offset with a CO2 Certified Emission Reductions to be purchased from Mitsui Sumitomo Bank.

The CO2 Certified Emission Reductions to be purchased for (2) will offset the emissions from a small-scale water power project in Brazil. Building a new local power plant will reduce loss in electricity transfer and is expected to dramatically cut COs emissions.
