SEICHO-NO-IE ACQUIRES CERTIFIED EMISSION REDUCTIONS
Seicho-No-Ie has acquired a 5,000 ton CO2 Certified Emission Reductions trust from Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Bank.
This is being implemented as part of our Zero Carbon movement that began from the 2007 movement year. While doing our best to reduce our CO2 emissions, we offset the remaining portions through using renewable energy and other measures.
From this year, at our three business sites (the headquarters business office in Harajuku, Tokyo; the Main Temple in Saikai-shi, Nagasaki Prefecture; and the Uji Temple in Uji-shi, Kyoto Prefecture) we are aiming for “Zero Carbon ” in our CO2 emissions from the energy that is consumed (including electricity, city gas, LP gas, water supply and drainage, kerosene, heavy oil, gasoline for official vehicles), and from the construction and expansion or rebuilding of centers.
The CO2 emissions for the 2006 movement year at our three business sites for the energy that as consumed was 1,204,283 kg-CO2. Based on this information, the 5,000 ton CO2 Certified Emission Reductions will be offsets for about 4 years of CO2 emissions at the 3 business sites.
The Certified Emission Reductions that we have acquired are from the enterprise of destroying the fluorocarbon gas called HFC23 by a chemical plant in South Korea.
Through the cooperation of a Japanese chemicals manufacturer, the fluorocarbon gas called HFC23, a byproduct from HCFC22, the fluorocarbon gas for refrigerants that is being produced by a South Korean chemical manufacturer, will be collected and destroyed at a newly built incinerator. Until now HFC23 was released into the atmosphere because of its nontoxic nature. However, it is said to have 11,700 times greenhouse effect of CO2. This enterprise’s contribution to the reduction of global warming is immense.
Mitsubishi Corporation has purchased the Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) for this project. Fifty thousand tons of these CERs were consigned to Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Bank and made small-lot consignments. This is a world first for trust related products in Certified Emission Reductions.
Seicho-No-Ie is aiming for not only for reductions of CO2 emissions at its three business sites but also reductions in emissions from the movement of employees and the holding of events.
