U.S. Missionary Headquarters Purchases Green Electricity Certificate

In order to Realize "Carbon Neutral"

On April 1 the United States Missionary Headquarters signed a contract with Three Phases Energy Service Inc. headquartered in California to purchase green electricity in order to bring down to zero the carbon emissions from the electricity used at the Headquarters building.

Leaders step toward activity of "Zero Carbon"

The Green Energy Certificate is proof that the electricity used at the Headquarters (average 28,000 kWh/year) will be supplied by natural energy produced by wind power, etc., without using fossil energy. The cost of green electricity is $560/year ($18.82/MWh), or $1,581 for a three-year period (approx. 190,000 yen).

In Japan, green electricity is being used at Seicho-No-Ie Public Lectures. The U.S. Missionary Headquarters is the first to sign an annual contract to purchase green electricity for the entire facility’s power consumption.

At its June directors’ meeting, the Missionary Headquarters also decided to purchase green electricity for three years to power the Publication Department building, which is located adjacent to the Headquarters. The Missionary Headquarters also plans to deliberate on and aims to purchase green electricity at the Southern California Missionary Area and other centers in the U.S.A. The Missionary Headquarters hopes to acquire ISO14001 in five years.

Mr. Hurbert Oda, Chairman of the U.S. Missionary Headquarters, remarked, “At the March 2007 directors’ meeting, the signing of a three-year contract to realize carbon neutral was unanimously approved. This is thanks to all the directors’ understanding and support. The fact that Rev. Masanobu Taniguchi praised our efforts in his May 15 blog also gave us great joy.”

Remarks By Rev. Yoshiko Teshigawara,

Bishop of the United States Missionary headquarters

“The constant and serious concern of the Chairman, Mr. Oda, and other directors for contribution to environmental protection bore fruit in the form of the purchase of green electricity. From now on leaders and members will join forces in increasing the number of people who practice a life of gratitude to everything, as taught in the Divine Message of Grand Harmony, under the guidance of Rev. Masanobu Taniguchi.”
